Anne Klibanski Visiting Scholars Award 2022-2023

DESCRIPTION OF AWARD

Despite extensive work to improve gender equity in academic medicine, women continue to lag behind men in promotions and leadership positions. This inequity was intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, which disproportionately affected women who were tasked with taking on increased childcare and household responsibilities and/or the care of ailing relatives.

One reason for the lower promotion rates of women is that they face impediments to travel for national and international presentations, activities critical to academic promotion and success. Moreover, women are less likely than men to be invited to be visiting professors and to give Grand Rounds. The lack of national and international speaking engagements also decreases opportunities to network and seek outside mentors and collaborators, all of which are important to career advancement.

Because of COVID-19-related restrictions, many Grand Rounds and Visiting Professorships are being conducted virtually. This change provided an opportunity to promote the participation of more women in Visiting Professorships by removing the barriers that often prevent women from traveling.

The Center for Faculty Development’s Anne Klibanski Visiting Scholars Award was created in this context and, given its success, has continued. Anne Klibanski, MD, President and CEO of MassGeneral Brigham and former Director of the Center for Faculty Development, has been a strong supporter and advocate for women physicians and scientists at MGH. Among many other initiatives, she was instrumental in establishing the MGH Backup Childcare Center and the Claflin Distinguished Scholar Awards, which support the careers of women scientists at MGH at a critical period in their careers, when primary responsibility for childrearing might otherwise reduce their productivity.

This award will be presented to women faculty clinicians, educators, researchers, and postdocs at MGH who have shown exceptional promise as leaders in their field and whose careers would specifically benefit from speaking, mentoring, and networking opportunities at the national or international level. This award will provide an opportunity to serve as “virtual” Visiting Professor and give Grand Rounds at a national or international institution, organized by the Center for Faculty Development. Moreover, a mentor at the host institution will be identified for the Scholar. The Scholar will also receive professional coaching on presentation and interview skills, as well as a virtual career development seminar series, a time commitment of approximately 1 hour/month over the year. Furthermore, the Scholar will be given the opportunity to give a talk at MGH with a scholar from the host institution as part of the Anne Klibanski Visiting Lecture Series. Please note that this award does not fund research or protected time.

AWARD START DATE

Awards will start September 2022. Visiting Professorships will take place during the academic year 2022/2023. During that time, professional coaching and other career development opportunities will be provided via virtual technology.

ELIGIBILITY

• Primary faculty appointment at MGH
• Women physicians, clinicians, clinician-educators, and researchers
• MD, PhD, or equivalent advanced degree
• For the Anne Klibanski Visiting Scholar Faculty Award, applicants must have an academic HMS appointment of Instructor, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. The appointment must be through the MGH.
• For the Anne Klibanski Visiting Scholar Postdoc Award, applicants do not need an HMS faculty appointment, but your work must be at MGH.

REVIEW PROCESS

Applications will be evaluated and ranked by a multidisciplinary Review Committee. Applicants will be notified in June 2022.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. Topic of Proposed Presentation
2. Overview of proposed presentation(s) (1-page maximum for each presentation, up to 3 presentations.
3. HMS CV
4. Personal Statement (1-page maximum) – how this award will further career development and academic advancement, short and long-term goals, current challenges
5. Two Letters of Support:
   • Department Chair, Division or Unit Chief. The letter should include:
     • Potential role of the faculty member or postdoc in the department/division over time
     • Commitment to continue to support the faculty member or postdoc in her career development over time
   • Mentor

HOW TO APPLY

The Center for Faculty Development is now accepting applications online via the CFD Award Manager.

This user-friendly system allows MGH researchers to submit electronic applications to the Center for Faculty Development. The system has been designed to allow users to:

• View all your CFD applications that have been submitted via the online grants system

Instructions for Applying Online

To get started, please click the "Apply" button at the bottom of this call.

1. Create your account: Login using your Partners credentials and fill-out the profile information.
2. Complete the application: once your profile is complete, you will automatically progress through to the online application. If you cannot complete the application at one time, “save” the application and return to it at a later time to finish. Before submitting your application, you will have the ability to make changes to the application.
3. Submit your application: once you have completed the application click on the “submit” button at the bottom of the page. Once you submit it, you will not be able to make further changes unless you send a request to ECOR (note that once the deadline passes, request to make changes will not be accepted).

Useful tips:

• To avoid losing your work, remember to save frequently
• You can only upload PDF documents. Limit characters to A-Z, a-z and 0-9 when naming PDF documents. Do not use periods, commas, or dashes in the file name.
